The Capsule Wardrobe: 15 Pieces, 30 Outfits
A capsule wardrobe removes decision fatigue: fewer pieces, all of which work together. Here is a proven 15-piece system that produces 30 or more outfits.
The 15 pieces
- 2 neutral tees (white, black)
- 2 button-down shirts (white, light blue)
- 2 knit sweaters (one crewneck, one cardigan)
- 2 pairs of trousers (black, beige or navy)
- 1 pair of jeans
- 1 midi skirt or chino shorts
- 1 blazer
- 1 lightweight coat
- 1 pair of white sneakers
- 1 pair of loafers or ankle boots
- 1 structured bag
The color rule
Pick two neutrals plus one accent. Most of the wardrobe should be in the neutrals, with the accent used sparingly in tops and accessories.
How to combine them
Every top should pair with every bottom. That is the whole trick. A white tee works with trousers, jeans, and the skirt — repeat that logic and the outfits multiply on their own.
Layer the blazer or cardigan over any top to turn a casual base into a put-together look. Add the coat for colder days.
30 outfits, no math required
The combinations come naturally once every piece is in the same palette. Track what you actually wear for two weeks and remove the rest.
